Model STAR-L answer — Civil Service HEO
"Tell me about a time you had to manage multiple priorities and deliver to a tight deadline." — Delivering at Pace
I was working as an analyst in a government department during a parliamentary recess period when our team was unexpectedly asked to produce a briefing on three concurrent policy areas for a minister's return from recess — in four working days, with only two of us in the team.
I was responsible for two of the three briefing areas and co-ordinating the overall output. Neither topic was one I had worked on previously.
I immediately triaged the three briefings by complexity and political sensitivity, working with my colleague to assign them based on our existing knowledge. I built a simple tracking document shared between us showing key milestones and dependencies. For my own areas, I contacted the relevant policy leads within the department to gather the most current position and flagged immediately where I found conflicting data in published sources — rather than waiting until the draft was complete. I produced a first draft of each briefing within 36 hours, circulated for internal review, and incorporated feedback in a second pass. Where I could not resolve a technical question myself, I escalated to a senior colleague with a specific question rather than a general request for help.
Both briefings were delivered 18 hours before the deadline, allowing the minister's private office time to review. The minister used both briefings in two separate stakeholder meetings in the first week back. My line manager noted in my midyear review that the approach to triaging and escalating early had been the difference — the previous year's equivalent exercise had required a weekend of work to deliver the same output.
I learned to build in review time as a formal milestone rather than hoping for it. The tracking document became a template used by the wider team for subsequent urgent submissions.
