How NHS Trac ATS Scores Your CV

When you apply for an NHS job through NHS Jobs, your application is processed by Trac — the ATS used by over 200 NHS Trusts. Trac parses your CV and scores it against the person specification for the role. Applications that do not meet the minimum essential criteria are automatically filtered out before any recruiter sees them.

Unlike commercial ATS systems that score keyword density, NHS Trac specifically looks for evidence of essential criteria. This means it is not enough to list a skill — you need to demonstrate it with a specific example in your work experience section. STAR-format bullet points (Situation, Task, Action, Result) score significantly higher than duties-only descriptions.

Our checker analyses your CV against the job description you provide, using the same scoring logic as NHS Trac — keyword matching, section recognition, and values alignment. Paste the full person specification from the NHS job listing for the most accurate results.

NHS CV Format Requirements for ATS

Single-column layout

NHS Trac struggles with multi-column CVs — use a simple single-column format

Registration number at the top

NMC, GMC, HCPC or GPhC number must be prominently placed near your contact details

Standard section headings

Use "Work Experience", "Education", "Training & Development" — not creative alternatives

STAR evidence in bullet points

Each work experience bullet should show Situation → Action → Result, not just duties

NHS values language

Weave NHS Constitution values (compassion, respect, commitment to quality) into your experience descriptions

No photos or graphics

Images break NHS Trac parsing — remove all photos, logos, and decorative elements

Two pages maximum

Standard for Band 5–7. Band 8+ may extend to three pages if relevant experience requires it

PDF format recommended

PDF preserves formatting across all NHS Trust systems — DOCX can reflow unexpectedly
