Why a good CV still fails to get interviews
Most people with the right experience for a role still do not get interviews — not because they are underqualified, but because their CV does not pass the first two gatekeepers: the ATS and the 6-second recruiter scan.
The Applicant Tracking System compares your CV against the job description and scores the keyword overlap, format parsability, and section completeness. If your score is below the threshold — which varies by employer — the CV is not shown to a human. You never get a rejection; the application simply disappears.
If your CV does reach a recruiter, they typically spend under 10 seconds on the first pass: personal statement, most recent role, qualifications. If those three elements do not immediately signal relevance to the role, the CV is moved to the no pile. The improvement work targets both gatekeepers.
The six areas that have the most impact
These are the improvements that consistently lift both ATS scores and recruiter response rates. Most CVs have problems in at least three of these areas.
Bullet points
Common problem
Generic, duty-focused language that could describe anyone in the role
Fix
Action verb + specific achievement + measurable result where possible
Personal statement
Common problem
A paragraph that could be pasted onto any application without changing a word
Fix
Three to five lines naming the job title, sector, most relevant experience, and why this employer
Keywords
Common problem
Missing the specific phrases from the job description — so the ATS scores the CV low
Fix
Mirror the language of the advert in your skills, bullets and personal statement
Format
Common problem
Columns, tables, text boxes or graphics that prevent the ATS from reading the CV
Fix
Single-column, plain PDF, standard section headings, no graphics
Quantification
Common problem
No numbers — no sense of scale, impact or what you actually achieved
Fix
Add team sizes, budget figures, percentages, time savings or revenue numbers to key roles
Section structure
Common problem
Missing sections, wrong order, or non-standard headings that confuse ATS parsing
Fix
Personal statement → Work experience (reverse chronological) → Education → Skills
