1

It is being rejected by ATS before a human sees it

Very common

75% of CVs are rejected by Applicant Tracking Systems before a recruiter reads them. ATS software scores your CV against the job description and filters out anything below the threshold. You could be the perfect candidate but score 50% on ATS because you used the wrong terminology or a two-column layout.

Fix: Run a free ATS check before every application. Fix keyword gaps and formatting issues first.

2

Your keywords do not match the job description

Very common

ATS systems score keyword matches literally — "customer service" and "client support" are different strings. If the job description says "stakeholder management" and your CV says "managing relationships with key stakeholders", you may score zero for that criteria. Even slight wording differences can halve your ATS score.

Fix: Read the job description carefully and mirror the exact language used. Use a keyword checker to find the gaps.

3

Your CV formatting is breaking ATS parsing

Common

Two-column layouts, tables, text boxes, and graphics look professional on screen but are unreadable to ATS parsers. Your skills section might be scrambled with your job titles. Your contact details might be invisible if they are in a Word header. The recruiter sees a garbled mess — if they see it at all.

Fix: Switch to a single-column layout. Remove all tables, graphics, and headers/footers. Save as PDF.

4

You are applying for the wrong level of role

Common

Applying too high (insufficient experience) or too low (overqualified) both result in rejection. UK employers also filter by location, visa requirements, and salary expectations at the application stage. A strong CV sent to the wrong role gets zero interviews — it is a targeting problem, not a CV problem.

Fix: Check the essential criteria honestly. Apply to roles where you meet 70%+ of the essential requirements, not just the desirable ones.

5

Your personal statement is generic

Common

"Hard-working professional with excellent communication skills seeking a challenging role" is on tens of thousands of CVs. Recruiters skip generic statements in under 3 seconds. Your personal statement needs to be tailored to the specific role — referencing the sector, the level, and what makes you the right fit for this job specifically.

Fix: Rewrite your personal statement for each application. 3–4 sentences: who you are, your key achievement, what you offer this employer, and your career goal.

6

Your work experience describes duties, not achievements

Very common

"Responsible for managing social media accounts" tells a recruiter nothing about your impact. Every other candidate managed social media accounts. "Grew Instagram following from 2,000 to 18,000 in 6 months by implementing a content calendar strategy" tells a recruiter you deliver results. Duties-based CVs are forgettable.

Fix: Rewrite each bullet point as an achievement: what you did, what you used, what the measurable result was. Quantify wherever possible.

7

You are not tailoring your CV to each role

Very common

A generic CV sent to 50 roles will get fewer interviews than a tailored CV sent to 10. Recruiters can tell immediately when a CV has not been tailored — the personal statement does not reference the role, the skills section does not match the requirements, and the most relevant experience is buried. Tailored CVs consistently outperform generic ones.

Fix: For every application, update your personal statement, reorder your skills to match the job, and adjust the opening bullet of your most recent role to reflect the key requirements.

8

Your CV has a skills-experience mismatch

Moderate

Listing "Python" under Skills when you have never used it in a professional role is a red flag — it will come up in interview and you will be caught out. Similarly, claiming leadership skills with no evidence of ever having led anyone is unconvincing. Every skill you claim should have at least one supporting example somewhere in your experience.

Fix: Audit your skills section. Remove anything you cannot back up with a real example. Add the evidence to your work experience descriptions.

9

You have gaps or format issues that trigger screening

Moderate

Unexplained employment gaps, inconsistent date formats, missing key sections (no Skills section, no Education details), or a CV over 3 pages all trigger recruiter hesitation. In a competitive market with 50+ applications per role, any reason to reduce the pile is used.

Fix: Address gaps briefly in your personal statement if they exceed 6 months. Use consistent MM/YYYY date format throughout. Ensure Work Experience, Education, and Skills sections are all clearly present and labelled.

Quick diagnosis: which problem do you have?

Sending 20+ applications, zero responses: Almost certainly an ATS or keyword problem. Run a free ATS check immediately.

Getting ATS through but no recruiter callback: Your CV passes the filter but does not stand out. Fix your personal statement and rewrite bullets as achievements.

Getting interviews but no offers: Your CV is working — this is now an interview skills problem, not a CV problem.

Only getting responses for lower-level roles: Your CV is not clearly demonstrating the right seniority. Check your scope language — budget sizes, team sizes, stakeholder levels.
