Why tailoring your CV matters
The single biggest mistake UK job seekers make is sending the same CV to every employer. A CV that lists everything you have ever done, in the order you did it, scores roughly the same low number against every job description — because it is not written for any of them.
Employers reject generic CVs for two reasons. First, the application does not match the role: the keywords, qualifications and examples they need to see are buried somewhere on page two, or missing entirely. Second, sending an obviously generic CV signals that you have not read the advert carefully — which makes the rest of the application harder to trust.
A note on Applicant Tracking Systems
Most UK companies now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to compare CVs against the job description before a human ever opens them. JobSpaceAI helps you tailor your CV to the specific role by identifying missing keywords, weak matches, and formatting issues that cause CVs to be filtered out at this first automated step. You do not need to understand ATS in detail to use the tool — the scan tells you what to change.
Tailoring is not about deception. It is about leading with the experience and skills that are most relevant to this employer, in the language they used in the advert.
How JobSpaceAI tailors your CV
Four steps. Around 60 seconds end to end. No sign-up needed for your first scan.
Upload your CV
PDF, Word or plain text. No sign-up required for your first scan. Your file is stored securely so you can come back to it.
Paste the job advert
Copy the full job description from the employer site, LinkedIn, Indeed or Reed. The more of the advert you paste — including the person specification — the more accurate the match.
Get a match analysis
A 0–100 score showing how closely your CV matches this specific role, the keywords from the advert that are missing from your CV, and the sections that are weakest.
Get rewrite suggestions
Specific bullet-by-bullet rewrites tailored to the language of the advert. Apply them, re-scan if you want, then submit a version of your CV that actually matches the role.

What you get in every CV match
Each scan returns a full breakdown — not just a score. The point is to tell you what to change, not just how you did.
A keyword match score
A clear 0–100 score showing how closely your CV matches the specific job description you have pasted — based on keyword overlap, section structure, and formatting compatibility.
Missing skills identified
A list of the skills, qualifications and tools that appear in the job advert but are missing from your CV — so you know exactly what to add or strengthen.
Section-by-section rewrite suggestions
Specific suggestions for your personal statement, work experience bullets, and skills section — written in the language of the advert you pasted, not generic CV advice.
ATS compatibility check
A check on whether your CV format will be parsed correctly by UK ATS systems including NHS Trac, Civil Service Oleeo, and the ATS platforms used by FTSE 100 employers.
A matching cover letter (optional)
Once your CV match score is strong, you can generate a tailored cover letter for the same role in under a minute — drawing on the same job description and CV.

Common CV tailoring mistakes
The mistakes below are the ones we see most often when scanning UK CVs against UK job descriptions. Fixing any one of them will lift your match score.
Copy-pasting keywords from the job advert
ATS systems and recruiters both catch this. Stuffing the advert’s exact phrases into your CV without supporting evidence either gets filtered as low-quality or flagged as suspicious by the hiring manager. Tailoring means rewriting your real experience in the language of the advert — not copying the advert.
Using a format the ATS cannot read
Tables, two-column templates, text boxes, images of text, and design-heavy PDFs all break ATS parsing. The cleanest format is a single-column CV in PDF or DOCX with standard section headings. If the ATS cannot read your CV, your match score is zero regardless of how relevant your experience is.
Ignoring soft skills mentioned in the job
Most job descriptions list both hard skills (qualifications, software, certifications) and soft skills (communication, leadership, resilience). Candidates focus on the hard skills and miss the soft skills entirely — but those phrases are also part of what the ATS scores against.
Generic personal statements that fit any role
A personal statement that could be pasted onto five different applications without changing a word is a generic statement. The opening of your CV should reference the role, the employer, and the specific reason you are applying. This is where tailoring shows up first to a recruiter.
Using the same CV for senior and junior roles
A Band 5 NHS application and a Band 7 application are scored against different person specifications. A graduate role and a senior manager role expect different evidence in the personal statement and different bullet structures. Re-order and re-emphasise — do not just resubmit.
Not reading the person specification
Many UK job adverts — especially NHS, Civil Service, local government, and education — score applications directly against the person specification. If you tailor only against the headline job title you will miss the specific essential and desirable criteria the panel is actually using to shortlist.
